Southeast Asia Faces Cross-Border Haze Threat: The Role Of Green Investment

Southeast Asia once again stands on the precipice of a cross-border haze disaster, with Indonesia grappling with a disturbing surge in forest fires and an extended dry season. Experts caution that the dry conditions, worsened by the El Nino phenomenon and resulting in reduced rainfall, are expected to peak in this September 2023, predominantly affecting Sumatra.

This impending crisis underscores the critical need for preventive measures and proactive responses, necessitating increased cooperation among nations to share crucial information about the haze and its potential health impacts while prioritizing transparency in addressing the issue. Simultaneously, it emphasizes the growing role of green investment in safeguarding public health.

El Nino Intensifies Dry Conditions: Rising Hotspots in Sumatra

El Nino, a weather phenomenon associated with dry and hot conditions, is predicted to intensify over this month, exacerbating the dry climate. This escalation heightens the risk of peatland and vegetation fires, which can trigger cross-border haze, affecting all of Southeast Asia.

Recent observations have identified an increase in hotspots in Sumatra, with numbers reaching 23 hotspots on Sunday, September 3, 2023, and 28 hotspots on the preceding day. The majority of these hotspots are concentrated in the southern regions of Sumatra. This prolonged dry spell poses a considerable risk of hazy conditions that may impact Singapore and Malaysia.

Vigilance and Proactive Measures Needed

The National Environment Agency of Singapore (NEA) remains vigilant, closely monitoring the situation. While we appreciate the preventive measures taken by the Indonesian government so far, given their available resources, we hope for more proactive measures as hotspots continue to rise. Preventing forest fires and detecting them early are crucial steps to prevent the uncontrolled spread of fires leading to forest conflagrations. Furthermore, we must emphasize the importance of protective measures for individuals, such as using N95 masks designed to shield against inhaling fine particles that may contain toxic components from the haze.

The Impact of Haze: Health, Disruptions, and Environmental Consequences

Haze has significant repercussions on various facets of life. Firstly, it poses adverse health effects, particularly on vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly. Haze contains fine particles that can harm the respiratory system, increasing the risk of respiratory diseases like Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI/ ISPA) and exacerbating conditions like asthma.

Furthermore, haze restricts community mobility and disrupts daily activities, affecting work, school, and transportation. The aviation sector, in particular, experiences disruptions due to reduced visibility, resulting in flight delays and cancellations. Secondly, haze has severe environmental impacts. Smoke from forest fires can damage natural ecosystems and threaten biodiversity. Additionally, haze can affect local climate and weather patterns.

Emphasizing the Role of Green Investment

In light of the impending haze crisis and broader environmental challenges facing Southeast Asia, green investment initiatives gain significant prominence. As governments and stakeholders in the region focus on combating haze and addressing its root causes, environmentally sustainable investments can play a vital role in mitigating future risks.

Green investment projects, including those related to renewable energy, reforestation, sustainable agriculture, and eco-friendly technologies, can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and forest degradation. These initiatives not only combat climate change but also enhance resilience against the environmental challenges that lead to events like cross-border haze.

As Southeast Asia prepares for the potential haze crisis in 2023, there is a growing recognition that proactive, cooperative efforts, and investments in sustainability are essential to safeguard the region’s environment, health, and economic well-being. These endeavors pave the way for a greener, more resilient future for Southeast Asia, where cross-border haze becomes a relic of the past.
